I fidgeted in the elevator, as I stared at the bright orange numbers slowly increasing. The people standing around me didn’t notice that I had my hair cut earlier that day, but then again, they didn’t know who I was. He knew. He would notice.
Leo always touched and played with my hair. I knew how much he was addicted to it, so it scared the crap out of me when I mistakenly told my hairdresser give me a new style. As soon as I felt the weight on my head get lighter, I began to dread the 1’oclock appointment we had for lunch.
I subconsciously fingered the new ends of my short do, and wondered how he might react. I didn’t have much time to think, as the doors slid open revealing the busy office that my boyfriend owned. Shuffling out, like my company, I listened for one of the two familiar voices. I caught hers first.
“Jacobs, I swear if you can’t copy a simple 4 page spread, I will make sure your next job will be getting coffee for the people in the mailroom!” the sweet, but commanding voice threatened. I watched Lucia walk around the corner in her flattering baby blue dress, giving one order after another, without even looking up from her notebook.
“Where the hell is that Seton article?” she yelled. She looked up to find her next victim, and saw me standing right outside the elevator, witnessing her taking charge. I saw the look of shock, then approval come over her as she took in my new look.
She walked over to me and pulled me into a hug. “Don’t you look lovely,” she whispered in my ear.
I returned her greeting and replied, “Thanks.”
When she let me go, she gave me a small frown. “I didn’t know you were coming here.”
I nodded. “It was kind of last minute. When he got in this morning, he sent me a text saying that we should have lunch.”
She sighed. “That’s why that boy’s been working his ass off since 9.” She began to restart her rounds, and I followed behind her. “He’s in a meeting, but he should be done soon. You can wait in my office.”
“Okay,” I smiled. Lucia was so understanding when it came to my and Leo’s relationship. She never questioned if I was good enough for him. In fact, I think she liked me almost as much as he did.
She opened her office door and nodded towards the medium, coffee-colored desk. “Make yourself at home. I’ll let him know you’re here.”
“Thank you,” I smiled walking pass her into the cozy room.
She left the door open and walked off, returning to her tyranny.
I looked around, observing the decorations. There were framed black and white photos behind her desk of Lucia standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and a small vase of colorful flowers sharing a table with a sleek modern style lamp. The minimal décor seemed to suit the small woman that claimed the space as her own.
“Luci, where the fu–oh.” A guy about Leo’s height stood in the doorway of Lucia’s office and stared at me. He was by all standards handsome, and something about him seemed familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. “You’re not Luci,” he grinned as he walked in and sat on the edge of the desk.
“No, I’m not,” I said. “I’m–”
“Danny,” Leo called, walking up to the door. When he saw I wasn’t alone, Leo’s smiling face went cold.
The other guy looked at Leo. “You two know each other?” He seemed to mean it as a statement rather than a question. “Of course you do.” He looked back at me. “Let me guess, the new hot intern? If you ever need anything, you should come see me.” His eyes slowly looked over me and he smiled. “And I mean anything.”
Officially uncomfortable with the mood, I stood and walked to Leo. “Actually, I’m his girlfriend,” I explained.
“No fucking way!” the guy laughed. “Harper has a fiancé and a girlfriend?” he smirked at Leo. “Now you have double the chance of not getting laid.”
I didn’t know who he was, but that guy started to piss me off. “Harper only has a girlfriend. Me.” I cocked my head to the side. “And not that it’s any of your business, but he gets laid anytime he wants.” I made sure to enunciate for emphasis when I added, “and it’s fucking amazing.”
“Damn, girl,” the guy said, smiling.
I grabbed Leo’s hand and glared at the guy. “Next time, be a good little boy and keep your shit to yourself.”
At my words, he grinned a grin that I knew didn’t mean anything good. “My name’s Ryan, by the way, and I’ll do whatever you want if you keep talking to me like that.”
I scowled and opened my mouth to give him a hearty “fuck off”, but Leo pulled me out the room before I could. I was focused on regaining my footing from being caught off guard, but I still heard the guy yell to me, “See you around, kitten.”
Leo navigated around desks and people, briskly walking toward the elevator. I stumbled behind him trying to keep up. The metal doors opened with perfect timing, causing Leo to stop only once we were inside.
As the doors slid close, he pulled me to him, crashing his lips onto mine. He gripped my ass with one hand while rubbing my neck with the other, making me moan against his mouth. He pushed me up against one of the metal box’s sides, and I let out a groan as a cold bar dug its way into my back. He completely ignored my discomfort, and so did I when he bit my lip. I kept his head close by tangling my fingers into his neatly groomed hair.
When he pulled back to breathe, I asked, “We’re not going to lunch, are we?”
“Not a fucking chance in hell,” he growled, hungrily staring at me while loosening his tie.
“You only have a two hour break,” I added, knowing where his mind was.
“Good thing I only need one.”
